How to Get More Google Reviews for Your Local Business
Google reviews are one of the most powerful ranking factors for local search — and one of the most neglected. Most businesses know they need reviews. Very few have a system for getting them consistently. Here is what actually works.
Why Reviews Matter More Than You Think
Reviews affect your visibility in two ways. First, Google uses review count and rating as a direct ranking signal — more reviews and higher ratings help you rank higher in the Map Pack. Second, review velocity (how often new reviews come in) signals to Google that your business is active and trusted. A business that gets two new reviews every month will outrank a business with the same total count but no new reviews in six months.
Ask at the Right Moment
The best time to ask for a review is immediately after you have delivered a great result. The customer is happy, the experience is fresh, and the motivation to help you is highest. Wait a week and that motivation drops dramatically. If you are a contractor, ask when the project is done and the customer is admiring the work. If you are a service provider, ask at the end of the appointment when they are thanking you.
Make It Ridiculously Easy
Every extra step between "I should leave a review" and actually submitting one loses you reviews. Send a direct link to your Google review form — not a link to your Google Business Profile where they have to find the review button. You can generate this link in your GBP dashboard under "Ask for reviews." Text it to them right there in the moment.
Follow Up (Once)
If someone says "sure, I will leave a review" and does not, one polite follow-up is appropriate. A simple text the next day: "Thanks again for choosing us. If you have a moment, here is the link to leave a review — it really helps." Do not follow up more than once. Nobody wants to be nagged.
Respond to Every Review
Respond to every review you receive — positive and negative. Thank positive reviewers by name and mention something specific about their experience. For negative reviews, respond professionally, acknowledge their concern, and offer to resolve it offline. Google sees responsiveness as a positive signal, and potential customers read your responses to judge how you handle problems.
Never Buy or Fake Reviews
Google is aggressive about detecting fake reviews. Buying reviews, trading reviews with other businesses, or having employees leave reviews can result in all your reviews being removed and your profile being suspended. Build reviews honestly from real customers or do not build them at all.
Build a System, Not a Campaign
The businesses with the most reviews do not run review campaigns. They have a system — a consistent process built into how they close every job or appointment. That system ensures review velocity stays steady month after month, which is what Google rewards.
At Mark B Marquis & Co, review strategy is built into our Google Business Profile optimization service. We help you set up the system, track your velocity, and make sure your reputation grows as steadily as your rankings. See why businesses choose us.

By 2026, national e-commerce no longer felt right. He pivoted to what matters: using 25+ years of digital marketing expertise to strengthen his own community—helping local businesses get found, supporting those in need, and keeping money in the local economy.
